In 2043, amid rising automation of industries and labor, the International Standards Organization (ISO) announced a series of new standards, named Infinite (∞), which outline a series of protocols with the stated goals of preserving quality of life in anticipation of a post-work reality. Section 7 refers specifically to the reduction of emigration and retention of populations during this transition:
- 7.4.3 Economies of waiting are created as a means of population retention, in order to preserve and sustain permanent populations within a region.
Mining and logistics companies operating along the Northern Sea Route rush to adopt the new standards, where compliance becomes a de facto condition of participation within the crucial trade artery. Consequences of these new standards are slowly felt by citizens living in the sub-arctic cities of eastern Siberia.
